Hajj 2024: 70 Tons of Local Indonesian Spices will Spice-up Pilgrims's Food

TIMESINDONESIA, MAKKAH – Amidst the preparations for the upcoming Hajj 2024 pilgrimage, one aspect stands out: the significant import of Indonesian spices. This year, over 70 tons of spices have been sourced from Indonesia, marking a substantial increase from previous years.

The Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, emphasized the importance of these spices in enhancing the culinary experience for Indonesian pilgrims. With a total demand exceeding 200 tons, the inclusion of Indonesian spices aims to provide a taste of home for pilgrims during their journey.

"Total of more than 70 tons of spices out of 200 tons spices needed has been prepared. We also take those local MSMe to prepare these spices," the Minister said. 

The use of Indonesian spices not only adds flavor but also holds cultural significance. Pilgrims can savor familiar dishes like rendang, gulai, nasi kuning, and sambal goreng, evoking memories of home and reinforcing a sense of identity amidst the spiritual journey.

"We hope by next year we could filfill the need of local Indonesian spices to make sure the taste tof the food is no different with those we have in Indonesia," the guy added. 

This year's procurement of spices involves a substantial engagement with local small and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM). Compared to last year's 15-ton import, this year's 70-ton milestone reflects a significant boost in collaboration with Indonesian businesses.

Looking ahead, the goal is to fully meet the spice demand from Indonesia, ensuring a consistent and authentic culinary experience for pilgrims. By supporting local businesses and promoting Indonesian cuisine on a global stage, the Ministry aims to strengthen cultural ties and promote Indonesia's culinary heritage.

The inclusion of Indonesian spices not only enriches the gastronomic offerings but also contributes to the overall well-being of pilgrims. Familiar flavors can provide comfort and a sense of belonging, especially during the physically and emotionally demanding pilgrimage journey.
